Pixar's highly anticipated film, Inside Out 2, is shattering box office records worldwide. In its second weekend, the animated movie grossed an astonishing $100 million domestically and $164.4 million overseas, bringing its total ticket sales to a staggering $724.4 million. This achievement catapulted Inside Out 2 to the top spot, overtaking Dune: Part Two, which grossed $711 million.
The film follows the story of emotions inhabiting a 13-year-old girl and has joined the elite few films to earn over $90 million in their second weekend at the domestic box office. Inside Out 2 outperformed other animated films with the biggest sophomore outing domestically and ranked seventh overall behind blockbuster franchises like Avengers, Star Wars, and Jurassic World.
Impressively, Inside Out 2's earnings of $355.2 million in North America marked a remarkable hold of just 35 percent in its second weekend, becoming the best hold for any film opening to $150 million or more. Previously, Star Wars: The Force Awakens held this distinction with a 40 percent hold. Internationally, the film amassed $369.4 million, with several major markets yet to open. It experienced only a 22 percent drop in its second weekend and achieved the second-largest openings in Brazil and Spain.
This phenomenal success serves as a major comeback for Pixar, and it is highly likely that Inside Out 2 will join the coveted $1 billion club at the global box office, a feat only accomplished by Barbie thus far.
The triumphant performance of Inside Out 2, coupled with the success of Sony's Bad Boys: Ride or Die, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, has revived the box office after a challenging year. For two consecutive weekends, domestic revenue has seen an increase compared to the previous year.
Bad Boys 4 maintained its position as the second-highest-grossing film in North America, collecting an estimated $18.8 million in its third weekend, bringing its total domestic earnings to nearly $150 million. The film experienced only a 44 percent decline in ticket sales.
In terms of new releases, The Bikeriders, directed by Jeff Nichols, opened in a solid third place with $10 million, meeting expectations. The movie, which follows the journey of a motorcycle gang in the 1960s, appealed to older males across the country.
However, Russell Crowe's latest film, The Exorcism, failed to generate significant interest. The Miramax production opened to a disappointing $2.4 million, marking one of Crowe's weakest wide releases. The movie received a low D CinemaScore and revolves around a troubled actor on the set of a horror film, prompting his daughter to investigate whether something sinister is at play. Vertical is responsible for the domestic distribution and marketing of The Exorcism.
The specialty box office also had its share of success, with Josh Margolin's Thelma grossing a commendable $2.2 million. Magnolia acquired the North American rights to the June Squibb comedy, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Squibb stars alongside Fred Hechinger and the late Richard Roundtree.
Pixar's Inside Out 2 continues to captivate audiences worldwide and solidify its place as the highest-grossing film of the year. With its remarkable box office performance, the film has become a symbol of the industry's recovery, breathing life into theaters once again.
