In a recent press conference at Doral, Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau expressed their concerns over the delayed resolution of the LIV Golf/PGA Tour deal and emphasized the need for a quick resolution in order to revitalize the sport.
The ongoing negotiations between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf have been a subject of discussion, as both parties aim to create a worldwide game that appeals to a broader audience. The PGA Tour has already secured private equity funds and player equity through the Strategic Sports Group, while also engaging in talks with the Private Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which supports LIV Golf.
The head of the PIF, Yasir Al Rumayyan, recently met with player directors on the PGA Tour Policy Board, including Tiger Woods, to discuss the potential partnership. Although deemed a necessary step, the general consensus was that the sides are still far from reaching an agreement.
During the news conference, Mickelson acknowledged his previous frustrations with the PGA Tour, attributing the delays to his advocacy for game-altering changes that have gradually been implemented over the years. He highlighted the positive impact LIV Golf has had on elevating events, increasing purses, and providing equity for players.
Mickelson stated, "Had LIV not happened and we not done what we did, none of that would have happened now. I knew the first two years were going to be difficult. But in the end, the game is going to be a lot more global, appeal to a younger crowd, and be in a much healthier place."
Bryson DeChambeau echoed Mickelson's sentiments, emphasizing that the current state of the game is not sustainable and urging a swift resolution. He stressed the importance of bringing together the best players in the world on a regular basis, rather than only during major championships.
DeChambeau stated, "It needs to happen fast... for the good of the sport. Too many people are losing interest. The only answer is for us to somehow come together in some sort of terms where it makes sense and for us to be playing all again in somewhat of the same boat."
The players expressed their desire for a rejuvenated golfing landscape that promotes global competition and provides more opportunities for players from different parts of the world to enter the game. They also showed support for Rory McIlroy's proposed Champions League-type setup, which would include elite events featuring players from all tours.
The resolution of the LIV Golf/PGA Tour negotiations remains uncertain, with the previously announced "framework agreement" having a deadline of December 31, 2023. While the PGA Tour has made progress through its deal with SSG, no definitive alliance has been established between the two parties.
In the meantime, LIV Golf players are prohibited from participating in PGA Tour events and the league is not recognized in the Official World Golf Ranking. However, it is worth noting that 13 LIV Golf players, including seven past champions, will be competing in the upcoming Masters tournament.
The urgency expressed by Mickelson and DeChambeau reflects the players' genuine concern for the future of the sport. The hope is that a swift resolution can be reached, paving the way for a more vibrant and competitive golfing landscape that captures the interest of fans worldwide.
