The Cleveland Browns have announced that former kicker Phil Dawson will be honored as part of the 2024 class of Browns Legends. Dawson, known for his reliable and consistent performance throughout his 14-year career with the Browns and 20 seasons in the NFL, will be recognized during a halftime ceremony in Week 3 when the Browns host the Giants at Cleveland Browns Stadium on September 22.
Dawson's dedication and workman-like approach to his kicking career earned him a place among the all-time NFL leaders in several categories. He appeared in 305 career regular season games, ranking seventh in games played. He also holds impressive records in field goals made, placing eighth with 441, and points scored, ranking 11th with 1,847. Dawson's field goal percentage of 83.8% stands at 16th in NFL history.
Reflecting on his time with the Browns, Dawson expressed his gratitude and humbleness for the recognition. He acknowledged that being named a Browns Legend was a dream come true, as he had always admired former players and aspired to be among them. The honor holds particular significance for him as it represents his love for Cleveland and the Browns organization.
While Dawson approached every opportunity on the field with the same focus and preparation, there were a few standout moments that defined his career in Cleveland. One of the most memorable kicks occurred in 2007 against the Ravens when a 51-yard field goal attempt was initially called no good but later overruled, sending the game to overtime. Dawson ultimately sealed the victory with another field goal. Another notable game-winning kick came in 2008 against the Bills on Monday Night Football, where Dawson nailed a 56-yarder to secure a win for the Browns.
Despite these highlight moments, Dawson took pride in his consistent performance and the satisfaction of doing his job, no matter the situation. He described his role as a "boutique" one but always aimed to be a reliable pickup truck that could be called upon whenever needed.
Dawson's legacy with the Browns is cemented in the team's record books. He holds franchise records for most career field goals, highest career field goal percentage, and most consecutive field goals made. He scored an impressive 1,271 points, the second-highest by a Brown, and played 215 games, ranking third in Browns history. His 14 seasons with the club tie for the second-most among any Browns player. In 2012, he received his first Pro Bowl selection.
Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Dawson made a significant impact in the Cleveland community. He worked with the Adoption Network, inviting recently adopted families to Browns home games, creating new memories for them. He also received several awards for his charitable and community efforts, highlighting his commitment to make a difference off the field.
As Dawson prepares to be inducted into the Browns Legends Class of 2024, he reflects on his 14 years in Cleveland with gratitude for the strong relationships built and the love he developed for the city. Being honored as a Browns Legend signifies the deep connection he formed with the people of Cleveland and the privilege of calling the city his home.
The Browns Legends Program, established in 2001, honors the individuals who have contributed to the success and history of the Browns organization. Inductees must have played for the team for at least five years, made significant contributions to their respective positions, and been retired from the NFL for at least five years.
