After two weeks of exhilarating sporting events, the Paris Olympics 2024 is set to conclude with a grand closing ceremony at the Stade de France. The Summer Games, which took place in iconic venues such as the Eiffel Tower, Grand Palais, and The Palace of Versailles, were truly historic.
American swimmer Katie Ledecky has emerged as the most decorated female Olympian, adding four more medals to her impressive tally of 14. Léon Marchand also made a splash, proving himself to be swimming's rising star. Meanwhile, the U.S. gymnastics team, led by the indomitable Simone Biles, secured redemption for themselves. Adding to the list of remarkable achievements, St. Lucia won its first-ever medal in the fast-paced track event.
However, the Paris Games were not without controversy. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif faced unjust scrutiny and attacks on her gender representation. Undeterred, she triumphed and won gold, supported by the vocal and enthusiastic fans in Paris. Furthermore, the safety of the Seine River, despite significant efforts to clean it up, raised concerns among swimmers throughout the Games.
As the curtain falls on this edition of the Olympics, the Stade de France will transform from an athletic arena into a concert hall for the closing ceremony. Titled "Records," the show promises to be a captivating spectacle under the artistic direction of Thomas Jolly, who delivered an unexpected and mesmerizing opening ceremony.
With over a hundred performers, acrobats, dancers, and circus artists, "Records" will captivate the audience. The traditional parade of flags will feature swimming sensation Katie Ledecky and rower Nick Mead as the U.S. flag bearers. Additionally, the Olympic flag will be handed over to Los Angeles, the next host city for the Summer Games.
The closing evening will showcase renowned French bands Air and Phoenix, but the celebration will also look towards the future. Exciting musical acts from Los Angeles, including Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Snoop Dogg, will grace the stage. Grammy-winning artist H.E.R. is slated to deliver a powerful rendition of the U.S. national anthem, adding to the star-studded lineup.
Sports enthusiasts can catch the closing ceremony on NBC or stream it on Peacock starting at 3 p.m. ET (9 p.m. Paris time) on Sunday, August 11. The event will be co-hosted by The Tonight Show's Jimmy Fallon and NBC sports commentator Mike Tirico.
