In a devastating incident in the central Mediterranean Sea, survivors of a rubber dinghy rescue reported that at least 60 people who embarked on the journey from Libya with them a week ago have lost their lives, according to a charity rescue group. SOS Mediterranee, in coordination with the Italian coastguard, rescued 25 individuals in a severely weakened condition on Wednesday. Tragically, two of them were flown to Sicily but succumbed to their ordeal.
The survivors shared that they departed from Zawiya, Libya, seven days prior to their rescue and encountered a series of hardships during their journey. After just three days, their engine malfunctioned, leaving them adrift without water and food for an extended period. The survivors, all of whom are male, disclosed that numerous deaths occurred during their week spent lost at sea, including women and at least one child. Twelve of the survivors were minors and hailed from Senegal, Mali, and The Gambia.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) called for urgent action to bolster maritime patrols and prevent further tragedies. The IOM stated that the central Mediterranean route, which the migrants were attempting to cross, is recognized as one of the most perilous sea migration routes worldwide. Last year, nearly 2,500 migrants lost their lives or went missing on this route, with the death toll for this year already reaching 226.
European Union governments, including Italy, have been striving to reduce the influx of migrants crossing from North Africa. They have provided financial aid and resources to countries like Libya and Tunisia to discourage departures from their shores. As per the Italian Interior Ministry, the number of migrants arriving by sea this year stands at 5,968, a significant decrease compared to 19,937 during the same period in 2023.
The tragic loss of over 60 lives serves as a stark reminder of the perils faced by migrants seeking a better future. Urgent measures are needed to address the underlying issues that drive these perilous journeys, providing safer alternatives and greater support for those seeking refuge and a chance at life.
