The Baltimore Orioles have reinstated outfielder Colton Cowser from the 60-day injured list, marking a significant step forward for the struggling team. In a corresponding move, infielder/outfielder Cooper Hummel has been designated for assignment.
Cowser’s absence due to a fractured left thumb, sustained while sliding into first base during only his fourth game of the season, has stretched to nine weeks, slightly longer than the initially projected six to eight weeks. His return is timely, as the Orioles have faced considerable challenges, holding a record of 22-36 with the Chicago White Sox being the only American League team faring worse.
Last season, Cowser showcased his potential by hitting 24 home runs and stealing nine bases, despite a high strikeout rate of 30.7%. His defensive skills in the outfield also contributed positively, leading to a strong overall performance credited with four wins above replacement, finishing second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting behind Luis Gil.
Cowser’s return is a much-needed boost, especially as the Orioles continue to deal with injuries to key outfielders Cedric Mullins, Tyler O'Neill, and Ramón Laureano. The current outfield lineup includes Heston Kjerstad, Dylan Carlson, Ryan O'Hearn, Jordyn Adams, and Jorge Mateo, all of whom will benefit from Cowser’s presence and experience.
As for Cooper Hummel, his brief stint with the Orioles has been tumultuous. After opting out of a minor league deal with the Yankees and signing with the Orioles on May 25th, he was designated for assignment the next day due to a roster adjustment following a concussion scare involving catcher Adley Rutschman. Re-signed on May 30th, Hummel has found himself once again designated for assignment after just one pinch-hit appearance.
Hummel’s career has been characterized by strong minor league performances with a .284/.419/.475 line and 132 wRC+ at Triple-A, but limited major league opportunities. He will navigate the DFA process again, with the possibility of electing free agency if he clears waivers, as he did just last week.
Cowser’s return injects hope and talent into the Orioles lineup, at a crucial juncture of the season. Meanwhile, Hummel’s uncertain status exemplifies the tough breaks often faced by players trying to solidify their place in the major leagues.
