The Baltimore Orioles have made a roster move, announcing the recall of outfielder Heston Kjerstad from Triple-A Norfolk. In order to create space on the 26-player roster, catcher David Bañuelos has been optioned back to the minors.
Kjerstad, who was the No. 2 pick in the 2020 draft, has impressed in his recent games. In 21 games this season, the 25-year-old has showcased his hitting prowess, boasting a batting average of .349, an on-base percentage of .431, and a slugging percentage of .744. He has already hit 10 home runs, driven in 30 runs, and even managed a stolen base. Kjerstad's average exit velocity stands at an impressive 91.6 mph, with more than 51% of his batted balls clearing the 95 mph threshold.
Last season, Kjerstad made his debut in the major leagues, playing in 13 games and delivering a slash line of .233/.281/.467 with two home runs and three RBI. Despite some ups and downs, the Orioles have shown faith in Kjerstad, selecting him over other notable players like Max Meyer, Austin Martin, and Emerson Hancock in the 2020 draft.
Kjerstad will be joining a talented group of young players on the Orioles' roster. This includes the likes of Adley Rutschman, who was the No. 1 pick in 2019, Colton Cowser (No. 5 in 2021), Jackson Holliday (No. 1 in 2022), and Gunnar Henderson, a second-round selection in 2019. It seems that the Orioles are betting on the future with this influx of young talent.
With Kjerstad's impressive performance in Triple-A Norfolk and his previous experience in the majors, Orioles fans will be eagerly anticipating his return to the big leagues. The team hopes that Kjerstad's bat will provide a much-needed boost to their offense as they continue their season.
