Oregon State Advances to Super Regionals After Winning Corvallis Regional
Oregon State University's baseball team, the Beavers, took a significant step towards securing a College World Series berth as they emerged victorious in the Corvallis Regional. In a thrilling game against UC Irvine, the Beavers' power hitters, Elijah Hainline, Dallas Macias, and Mason Guerra, launched home runs, while a collective effort from five pitchers limited UC Irvine to just four hits. Oregon State triumphed with a solid 11-6 victory at the Goss Stadium.
As the top-seeded team, the Beavers showcased their dominance by going undefeated throughout the regional tournament, including their final two victories against UC Irvine, who entered as the second seed. With their 45-14 season record, Oregon State now moves on to the Super Regionals, where they will compete in a best-of-three series against the No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats (43-14) in Lexington.
After their national championship win in 2018, Oregon State, the No. 15 overall seed, is aiming to secure their first College World Series appearance since then. Monday's clash against UC Irvine marked the completion of a game that had begun on Sunday but was postponed due to inclement weather with Oregon State leading 6-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
At the plate, the Beavers displayed an impressive offensive performance, out-hitting UC Irvine with a 14-4 advantage. Micah McDowell led the team with three hits, while Macias, Hainline, Guerra, and Jabin Trosky each contributed two hits. Hainline made a significant impact by driving in three runs, while Guerra and Macias added two runs apiece.
Oregon State's pitching staff played a crucial role in shutting down UC Irvine's offense. Despite starting pitcher Eric Segura's early exit during the postponed game on Sunday, the Beavers' bullpen stepped up admirably. A.J. Lattery, A.J. Hutcheson, Nelson Keljo, and Bridger Holmes combined their skills to pitch the final six innings on Monday, allowing Oregon State to secure the victory. The pitching quartet managed to tally eight strikeouts and remarkably did not walk any batters, unlike Segura who struggled with control the previous day.
UC Irvine fought hard to reach the regional final after securing a 17-7 victory against Tulane in an elimination game on Sunday. However, they were unable to overcome Oregon State's dominance and fell short in their quest for the regional title.
The game between Oregon State and UC Irvine was characterized by intense competition and unpredictable weather conditions. With a combined total of 11 walks, three wild pitches, and two hit batters, both teams faced challenges throughout the matchup. UC Irvine initially took a commanding 4-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to Dub Gleed's impressive three-run homer. However, the Beavers rallied back in the second inning, scoring five runs and securing a 5-4 lead with Hainline's decisive three-run homer. In the fourth, Oregon State extended their advantage when McDowell singled and scored on a wild pitch.
When the game resumed on Monday, UC Irvine managed to trim the deficit to 6-5 in the bottom of the fourth inning after a dropped fly ball by Brady Kasper enabled McCaffrey to score. Nevertheless, Oregon State remained composed and maintained their momentum. The Beavers secured two runs in the fifth inning with a four-hit onslaught, as Hainline doubled and scored on Guerra's single. Macias walked with the bases loaded, further increasing the Beavers' lead.
UC Irvine managed to put up a fight in the fifth inning, scoring an additional run. However, Oregon State continued to assert their dominance as McDowell's run-scoring single made it 9-6 for the Beavers. The team further solidified their lead in the eighth inning when Guerra blasted a solo shot to left field, extending the score to 10-6. Macias sealed the deal in the ninth, hitting another impressive solo home run to left field, bringing the final score to 11-6 in favor of Oregon State.
