In a recent announcement, Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist of OpenAI, unveiled a new startup named Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI) with a singular focus on creating a safe and powerful AI system. Sutskever, along with co-founders Daniel Gross and Daniel Levy, aims to advance AI capabilities while prioritizing safety.
SSI differentiates itself from larger tech companies by approaching safety and capabilities simultaneously, allowing for rapid progress without compromising on security. The announcement highlights the external pressures faced by AI teams at firms such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft, stressing that SSI's sole focus enables the company to avoid distractions from management overhead or product cycles.
"Our business model means safety, security, and progress are all insulated from short-term commercial pressures," the announcement states, emphasizing the potential for scalable advancements in AI within a peaceful environment.
Last year, Sutskever took the lead in removing Sam Altman as the CEO of OpenAI. In May, he left the company, hinting at a new project on the horizon. Shortly after Sutskever's departure, AI researcher Jan Leike and policy researcher Gretchen Krueger also resigned from OpenAI, citing concerns about safety taking a backseat to more appealing product endeavors.
While OpenAI continues to expand its partnerships with Apple and Microsoft, SSI has explicitly stated they will not pursue similar collaborations in the near future. During an interview with Bloomberg, Sutskever confirmed that SSI's primary focus will be on developing safe superintelligence, and no other ventures will be explored until this goal is achieved.
With Sutskever's expertise and the collective experience of the co-founders, Safe Superintelligence Inc. aims to make significant strides in the field of AI while maintaining an unwavering commitment to safety. As the company embarks on this new endeavor, the future of AI development in the hands of SSI looks promising.
