### Katie Smith and Jacy Sheldon to Join Ohio State Women’s Basketball Staff
In a significant move for Ohio State women’s basketball, two of the program’s most celebrated figures are returning to the Buckeyes in new capacities. Katie Smith, a cornerstone of the team during the mid-90s, has been appointed as an assistant coach, while Jacy Sheldon, a recent alumna, will take on the role of Director of Player Development.
The announcement marks a homecoming for Smith, who spent over a decade in the WNBA both as a player and coach. Smith, one of Ohio State’s all-time greats, earned numerous accolades throughout her college career, including Big Ten Player of the Year and All-American honors in 1996. She remains the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,578 points and held significant records in three-pointers and free throws at the time of her graduation.
Smith’s professional career was equally illustrious. She played 18 seasons in the WNBA, winning two championships and earning seven All-Star nods. Additionally, Smith was instrumental in Team USA’s success, securing gold medals in the 2000, 2004, and 2008 Olympics. After retiring as a player, Smith transitioned to coaching, serving as an assistant and head coach for the New York Liberty before becoming the associate head coach of the Minnesota Lynx.
Jacy Sheldon, who recently completed her rookie season with the Dallas Wings, brings her own commendable experience back to Ohio State. A two-time first-team All-Big Ten honoree, Sheldon led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten championship in her final year and was recognized as a second-team All-American. As the new Director of Player Development, Sheldon will play a vital role in shaping individual development plans for current players and serving as a mentor.
Both Smith and Sheldon expressed their excitement about returning to their alma mater and contributing to the program that helped shape their careers. Kevin McGuff, head coach of the Buckeyes, highlighted their passion for the program and commitment to fostering a competitive team environment. Their first game as part of the coaching staff will be against Charlotte, as Ohio State looks to build on its successful start to the season.
Ohio State women's basketball fans eagerly anticipate the impact these two legends will have on the team, both on and off the court.
