North Carolina Looks to Stay in the Race for National Championship Against Florida State

In an elimination game scheduled for Tuesday at the College World Series, the fourth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels will face off against the No. 8 seed Florida State Seminoles in a bid to keep their national championship dreams alive. The game is set to take place at 2 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. CT and will be televised on ESPN.
The Tar Heels have had a successful history against the Seminoles, having swept them at Boshamer Stadium in their last meeting in 2022. However, Carolina will need to be at the top of their game as Florida State aims to exact revenge for their loss.
North Carolina currently trails in the all-time series against Florida State with a record of 39-72. Nevertheless, the Tar Heels have shown strength in recent years, winning eight out of the last 13 games against the Seminoles since 2017.
Making their 12th appearance at the College World Series, North Carolina is eager to replicate their successes from previous years. Their last appearance in Omaha was in 2018, and they hold a record of 19-24 at the tournament since their first trip in 1960.
The Tar Heels have been successful in elimination games at the College World Series since 2006, with a record of 9-5. They have often started with a 1-1 record but have managed to advance further, reaching the tournament's final in 2007 and forcing a deciding bracket title game in 2008.
Notably, North Carolina has had a positive track record against current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) at the College World Series. Prior to their recent victory over Virginia, the Tar Heels had defeated NC State (2013), Louisville (2007), and Clemson (2006), while suffering losses to NC State (2013) and Florida State (1989).
Tar Heels' standout player, whose 27th home run of the season and 64th of his career against Tennessee solidified his status as the record-holder for both single-season and career home runs in UNC history. He has also impressed with a record-breaking 86 runs scored this season, as well as career-highs in hits, doubles, RBIs, and total bases.
On the pitching front, has been a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA Tournament, boasting a 2-0 record, two saves, and an impressive 1.26 ERA. With a streak of 12.1 consecutive scoreless innings, Pence has proven himself as a reliable weapon for the Tar Heels, not allowing a single hit in that span. His postseason performance has included 18 strikeouts and just 6 walks, keeping opposing hitters at a minuscule .104 batting average.
Tuesday's game will serve as a crucial test for North Carolina's quest for a national championship. If they emerge victorious against Florida State, the Tar Heels will advance to face Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon, keeping their championship dreams alive.
