In a move aimed at reducing the risk of concussions in the NFL, players are now being given the option to wear the newly introduced guardian caps during games. This season marks the first time that the caps are allowed for use in official games, although they have been used during training camp practices for some time.
One player who has embraced this new initiative is Indianapolis Colts running back, Jonathan Taylor. During the Colts' preseason game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Taylor was seen sporting the guardian cap, which featured the Colts logo stretched over it. While it may appear unusual when the camera zooms in, the objective is clear - to protect players from head injuries.
Taylor was not the only player to don the guardian cap in the first week of preseason. Colts tight end Kylen Granson also opted to wear it, as did Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman James Daniels during their game on Saturday. Daniels expressed satisfaction with the cap, mentioning that he didn't experience any headache or discomfort during the game.
The guardian cap, a large protective pad that fits over the regular football helmet, is specifically designed to reduce the impact and force of hits to the head, potentially decreasing the risk of concussions. While the majority of players have not yet opted for this additional headgear, the hope is that more will follow suit, especially if it proves successful in preventing head injuries.
However, not all players are enthusiastic about the guardians caps. Vikings pass rusher Jonathan Greenard took to social media to express his disapproval of the headgear. His succinct tweet suggests that he finds it unfashionable and out of the ordinary.
While the guardian caps may still be a rarity on the field, their presence in games marks another step towards prioritizing player safety in the NFL. As players like Jonathan Taylor don the protective headgear and demonstrate its efficacy, it is possible that more players will be convinced to give it a try.
As the season progresses, fans may have to get accustomed to seeing these guardian caps become a more common sight on the football field. With player safety at the forefront of the league's agenda, the introduction of the guardian cap is yet another measure taken by the NFL to protect its athletes from the dangers of head trauma.
