Legendary Cleveland Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar is currently fighting a fierce battle against liver failure and Parkinson's disease, according to recent reports. The 60-year-old former NFL star revealed that he was diagnosed with cirrhosis, leading to his placement on a liver transplant list last spring. In addition, Kosar received the devastating news of Parkinson's disease from an independent NFL doctor in February.
Kosar, who enjoyed a promising 12-year career as an NFL quarterback, shared that his health took a drastic turn during an event he hosted for the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football in December. He recalled feeling as though he wouldn't make it home from the game but persevered until the new year before seeking medical attention. Subsequent hospitalization and a blood transfusion revealed alarmingly low hemoglobin levels.
In January, doctors informed Kosar that a new liver would likely be necessary, a crisis further compounded when he had to be hospitalized for several days after flying to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. While his hepatologist, Dr. Anthony Post, acknowledged the severity of Kosar's condition at the beginning of the year, he noted that liver disease often shows fluctuations, and Kosar has shown signs of improvement.
Kosar himself admitted to frequent hospital visits, receiving blood transfusions, and undergoing fluid drainage. "I wish you could have seen me three months ago," he revealed. "I looked and felt like death – battling E. Coli blood poisoning and heart troubles. At that point, I truly believed I needed a liver transplant as soon as possible. It was an immense struggle."
Dr. Post added that Kosar is currently in a relatively stable phase, but his condition remains precarious. The veteran quarterback's life now hangs in the balance as he navigates the challenges of liver failure and Parkinson's disease, diseases that continue to impact his health on a daily basis.
The football community and fans across the nation have shown an outpouring of support for Kosar as news of his critical health struggles spread. As one of the most beloved figures in Cleveland Browns history, he is undeniably admired for his contributions on the field and the lasting impact he has made on the sport.
Despite the challenges, Kosar remains determined to fight and find solace during this difficult time. The football legend's resilience and fighting spirit will undoubtedly inspire many as he battles these life-threatening illnesses.
