In a shocking incident at Fashion Island mall in Newport Beach, California, a 68-year-old New Zealand woman named Patricia McKay was tragically killed in front of her husband during a robbery attempt. The couple, who were visiting California on holiday, were strolling through the upscale mall when they were attacked by two men.

According to local police, a struggle ensued, and the assailants forcibly dragged McKay to a nearby parking lot. There, she was allegedly run over by a third person driving a white Toyota Camry. The trio quickly fled the scene, leaving McKay's husband traumatized and devastated by the horrifying turn of events.

Following a police investigation, authorities managed to apprehend three suspects connected to the incident. Identified as 26-year-old Leroyernest Joseph McCrary of Compton, 18-year-old Jaden Cunningham of Lancaster, and 18-year-old Malachi Edward Darnell of Los Angeles, they were taken into custody on suspicion of homicide, robbery with a firearm, and conspiracy.

The arrest of the three suspects followed a lengthy car chase through the streets of Newport Beach, extending to highways leading to Cypress. The pursuit finally ended when the suspects abandoned their car and attempted to flee on foot but were quickly apprehended by law enforcement.

The family of Patricia McKay, devastated by the tragic loss, issued a statement expressing their profound sadness and requesting privacy as they come to terms with their loss. The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Christopher Luxon, called the incident "an absolute tragedy", expressing his condolences to the grieving family.

Patricia McKay was the wife of prominent Auckland businessman Doug McKay, who formerly held the position of the inaugural CEO of the amalgamated Auckland Council. Auckland's Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson paid tribute to McKay, describing her as an amazing, funny, loyal, and loving individual, and expressing her deepest sympathies to Doug and the rest of the family.

Fashion Island mall, known for its affluence and upscale shopping experience, is typically considered a safe and peaceful area. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with witnesses recounting the chaos and panic that unfolded when the attack took place. Newport Mayor Will O'Neill condemned the act as a "stunning, staggering act" and expressed his anger at the tragic loss, vowing that society must do better to prevent such incidents.

As the investigation continues, the Newport Beach community mourns the loss of Patricia McKay, a victim of a senseless act that has shaken the city to its core.
