In a disappointing blow to New York sports fans, the Rangers' loss to the Florida Panthers on Saturday night not only extended their Stanley Cup drought to over 30 years, but it also marked another season without a championship for any of the eight major professional teams in the area.

According to the Associated Press, the collective misery of the Rangers, Islanders, Knicks, Nets, Yankees, Mets, Jets, and Giants has now reached a staggering 100 seasons without a championship. The last taste of victory came all the way back in February 2012, when the Giants triumphed over the New England Patriots to claim the championship for the 2011 season.

While New York City FC managed to capture the MLS title in 2021, ending the city's drought in a different professional league, the traditional four major leagues - NHL, NBA, MLB, and NFL - have remained elusive.

Among the New York teams, the Yankees appear to have the best chance of breaking the dry spell. Currently holding the best record in the American League, the Bronx Bombers last lifted the trophy in 2009. However, with a 14-year gap since their last victory, it is the team's longest championship drought since they went 18 years without a title from 1978 to 1996.

The Rangers, who last won the Stanley Cup in 1994, find themselves trailing behind with an extended drought of their own. The Mets (1986), Islanders (1983), Knicks (1973), and Jets (1968) have been waiting even longer, desperately yearning for that championship glory.

While the Nets tasted success in the ABA, winning the championship in 1976, their transition to the NBA has been met with disappointment, as they have yet to secure an NBA title.

As New York's sports fans collectively hold their breath, hoping for a breakthrough in the championship drought, the city's pro teams continue to strive for excellence. Whether the Yankees can add another trophy to their illustrious history remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain - New York's major pro teams are more determined than ever to end this century of frustration and bring home the ultimate prize.
