The New York Knicks received a major blow as center Mitchell Robinson suffered a stress injury in his left ankle, effectively ending his season. The franchise announced on May 7 that Robinson would be out for an estimated six to eight weeks, leaving little hope for a return before the playoffs conclude.
Robinson's injury occurred during the Knicks' Game 1 victory over the Pacers, where he played just 12 minutes before being forced to exit the game. This setback comes after the talented center had previously undergone surgery on the same ankle in December, causing him to miss a significant portion of the season.
Following his recovery from surgery, Robinson made a comeback in late March, participating in two games before becoming inactive for one contest. He then played the final eight games of the regular season, averaging between 7 minutes and 19 minutes and 39 seconds of playtime.
Robinson's presence in the first-round matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers was notable, as he contributed to Games 1, 2, and 3. Unfortunately, he was unable to play in Game 4 and only appeared in Games 5 and 6, accumulating almost 43 minutes of game time.
Considering Robinson's limited playing time in Game 1 of the current series against the Pacers, it is safe to assume that he will not return to the court until at least October. The Knicks will now have to rely on adjustments to their rotation, potentially featuring Precious Achiuwa in a more significant role. With Bojan Bogdanovic also out for the season, Alec Burks may see increased minutes to ensure the team does not overtax their limited number of players.
In a heartfelt response to the news, Robinson took to Twitter, expressing his frustration and determination. He tweeted, "This is so f-d up dawg like I don't even know what to say right now!" Although a now-deleted message followed, claiming that he would seek revenge, his focus will undoubtedly shift towards his recovery and returning stronger next season.
Robinson concludes his season with averaged numbers of 5.6 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, 1.2 steals per game, and 1.1 blocks per game across his 31 regular-season appearances. In the six postseason games he took part in, he averaged 2.8 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game, 1.0 steal per game, and 1.2 blocks per game.
With the loss of Robinson, the Knicks face a challenging road ahead in the playoffs. His absence will undoubtedly be felt, and the team will need to rally together to compensate for the void left by their talented center.
