Jet's Haason Reddick Requests Trade Amid Contract Standoff
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - The New York Jets are facing a contract standoff with Pro Bowl edge rusher Haason Reddick, who officially requested a trade on Monday. General Manager Joe Douglas publicly rejected the trade request, expressing the team's expectation for Reddick to report to training camp. Reddick's unhappiness with his contract has led to his absence from the camp, resulting in daily fines of $50,000. The situation is unusual considering Reddick was acquired in a trade just four and a half months ago.
In a statement, GM Joe Douglas stated that the team has informed Reddick that they will not entertain any trade offers. Douglas emphasized that Reddick is expected to be present with his teammates and will continue to face fines under the CBA if he fails to report. He added that the team has consistently maintained their position since the trade discussions in March and that their focus remains on the players currently in training camp as they prepare for the regular season.
The Jets acquired Reddick from the Philadelphia Eagles in late March for a conditional third-round pick in the 2026 draft. They initially believed that Reddick would play under his existing contract, but issues arose when he skipped the entire offseason, including mandatory minicamp. Sources indicate that the Jets refuse to negotiate with a player who is not present in the camp, while Reddick insists on an upgraded contract before reporting.
Reddick is slated to earn a non-guaranteed base pay of $14.25 million in what is the final year of his three-year, $45 million contract signed with the Eagles as a free agent in 2022. Feeling that he has outperformed his contract, Reddick aims to be compensated on par with top edge rushers. This led the Eagles to shop him during the offseason, despite his impressive production. Reddick has recorded 50.5 sacks over the past four seasons, ranking fourth in the league over that span.
The Jets, who lost sack leader Bryce Huff to free agency, saw an opportunity and traded for Reddick, considering him one of their notable acquisitions in 2024. However, they did not address his contract situation at the time of the trade. Sources suggest that an extension offer was made, but it fell short of the guarantee Reddick seeks. The Jets had initially planned to revisit the contract later in the season or possibly after the season's conclusion, and they were surprised when Reddick failed to attend voluntary workouts.
There have been no official comments from Reddick or his representatives regarding the situation. As of now, Reddick has accumulated $1.05 million in mandatory fines for missing 21 days of training camp, as outlined by the collective bargaining agreement. The fines cannot be rescinded. He has also incurred approximately $300,000 in discretionary fines based on a clause in the CBA, with a $100,000 cost for missing minicamp in the spring and a $250,000 forfeited workout bonus for staying away during the offseason.
Despite the contract dispute, the Jets have high hopes for Reddick, who is set to turn 30 on September 20. He is expected to start at defensive end in their front four, replacing John Franklin-Myers, who was traded to the Denver Broncos. As of now, Michael Clemons and Will McDonald have been splitting time during training camp to compensate for Reddick's absence.
