In the upcoming 2024 NFL draft, the New York Giants are reportedly targeting North Carolina's quarterback Drake Maye. However, securing Maye's talents may require the Giants to make a "blockbuster" trade, with the team potentially needing to move up in the draft order.
According to Ralph Vacchiano of FOX Sports, the Giants currently hold the sixth overall selection in the first round. But it seems that this may not be enough for them to acquire Maye, who is highly sought after. Multiple NFL sources familiar with the Giants' thinking believe that Maye is the prospect most likely to prompt the team to make a significant move up from their current position.
At the top of the draft, the Chicago Bears are expected to select quarterback Caleb Williams from USC as the number one pick. This leaves Maye as the next highly-regarded quarterback on the Giants' radar. There is a belief among many in the NFL that if Maye somehow bypasses the Washington Commanders at the second overall pick, the Giants would strongly consider making a compelling offer to the New England Patriots to secure the third overall spot.
It remains uncertain whether the Giants would be willing to make a similar move for other top quarterbacks such as LSU's Jayden Daniels or Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, who are also likely to be available at the third spot.
The Giants have shown great interest in Maye, with reports confirming that they have met with the quarterback three times over the past two months. Interestingly, Maye has drawn comparisons to the Giants' current quarterback, Daniel Jones, as well as Justin Herbert, whom the team passed on to select Andrew Thomas in a previous draft.
One scout described Maye as being similar to Jones in terms of his playing style, noting his mobility and ability to execute designed runs. ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper also provided his assessment, stating that Maye possesses the physical and athletic attributes of Herbert, but his accuracy was slightly inconsistent during the past season.
Despite these concerns, Maye remains at the top of many teams' draft boards, with the belief that he is a coachable player who can excel with the right infrastructure in place. Washington, now with Kliff Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator, and New England, who recently hired Alex Van Pelt, seem to have the necessary support systems in place to nurture Maye's development.
Two potential trade partners for the Giants are the Minnesota Vikings and the Denver Broncos, both led by coaches with expertise in quarterback play in Kevin O'Connell and Sean Payton, respectively. Regardless of the team he ends up with, Maye is expected to find a favorable environment to continue his career.
Regarding the cost of a potential trade, if the Giants were to negotiate with division rivals Washington, they would likely have to pay a premium. The New England Patriots, being one spot lower on the draft board, may demand a slightly lower price. If Maye were to fall to the fourth pick, the Arizona Cardinals have expressed their openness to trade, as have the Los Angeles Chargers with the fifth pick.
The draft is less than three weeks away, and the Giants, among other teams, are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to secure their desired quarterback. Time will tell if their pursuit of Drake Maye leads to a successful "blockbuster" trade or if they will need to explore alternative options.
