### Giants Shake Up Quarterback Lineup: Tommy DeVito Takes the Helm
In a surprising move, the New York Giants have decided to overhaul their quarterback lineup, appointing Tommy DeVito as the new starting quarterback. Head coach Brian Daboll made the announcement on Monday, explaining that Drew Lock will assume the role of backup while Daniel Jones, the recent $160 million man, slides to the third-string position.
"Those are never easy conversations," Daboll commented after informing his quarterbacks of the changes. "After evaluating various aspects, watching a lot of tape, and considering Tommy's performance last year where he created a spark for us, that's why we've decided to go with him."
Daniel Jones, who was the sixth overall pick by the Giants in the 2019 NFL Draft, signed a substantial four-year contract recently in 2023. Despite leading the team to the playoffs in Daboll's inaugural year as head coach, Jones has struggled this season, contributing to the Giants' 2-8 record. He has thrown for 2,070 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions so far.
The financial implications of Jones's contract also appear to influence this decision. The deal includes a $23 million injury guarantee clause, meaning if Jones were to get injured and fail to pass a physical by March, the Giants would face a significant increase in their dead-cap charge from $22 million to a staggering $45 million. This factor likely weighed in on the decision to demote Jones on the depth chart.
DeVito, who is 26, stepped up last year when Jones was injured, starting six games. He concluded the season with 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions, with the Giants going 3-3 in his starts. Looking ahead, the Giants have crucial games lined up, hosting the Buccaneers on Sunday before heading to Dallas to face the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
"We're obviously not playing the way any of us want to play - and that's on all of us," Daboll said. "But felt like this was a decision we needed to make here and try to spark things, change things up."
