According to sources, the New Orleans Pelicans have decided to defer the Los Angeles Lakers' first-round pick until 2025, giving the Lakers the opportunity to choose 17th overall in the 2024 NBA draft. This comes as part of the Anthony Davis trade between the two teams in 2019.

The Pelicans had until 11:59 p.m. ET on Saturday to formally inform the NBA of their decision, and they have chosen to delay the Lakers' pick for another year. This pick is the final one of the three first-round picks that the Lakers owe to the Pelicans as part of the trade.

David Griffin, the New Orleans executive vice president of basketball operations, personally informed Lakers VP and general manager Rob Pelinka of their intentions on Friday. The Lakers currently possess the 17th and 55th picks in the upcoming June 26-27 draft.

With this deferment, the Pelicans retain the No. 21 pick in the 2024 draft, adding to their future assets. The decision allows the Lakers to proceed with their plans for the 2024 draft but also extends a bit of uncertainty as they will have to wait until 2025 for their own first-round pick.

This move showcases the strategic decision-making process of both teams and their long-term approach to building and improving their rosters. The Pelicans' decision to defer the pick gives them more flexibility and a chance to maximize the value they receive from the Lakers.

As the clock ticks towards the deadline, it remains to be seen how this deferment will ultimately impact both teams' future success on the court. The Lakers will now have to focus on utilizing their current pick positions effectively, while the Pelicans continue to accumulate assets for the future.

The 2024 NBA draft will be eagerly awaited to see how teams like the Lakers and Pelicans capitalize on their selections and shape the future of their respective franchises. The collaboration between these two teams will undoubtedly be closely watched as they navigate the evolving landscape of the league.
