In a tragic incident, a New Mexico State Police officer, identified as Justin Hare, was fatally shot early Friday morning while offering assistance to a driver of a disabled vehicle. The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Jaremy Smith of Marion, South Carolina, shot Officer Hare twice before fleeing the scene in the officer's patrol car. An intense manhunt is underway to apprehend Smith, who is considered armed and dangerous.

Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Smith, charging him with first-degree murder, armed robbery, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence, felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, and criminal damage to property. "The last words that officer uttered on this earth was an offer to help the man who was about to kill him," stated State Police Chief Troy Weisler in a video message, expressing his disgust and sorrow over the cold-hearted act of the perpetrator.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. local time when Officer Hare responded to a call for assistance from a motorist with a flat tire. The motorist was reportedly trying to signal for help from other drivers on Interstate 40 near Tucumcari in eastern New Mexico. Upon arrival, Hare parked his patrol car behind Smith's disabled vehicle.

According to Chief Weisler, Smith approached the officer's vehicle and engaged in a brief conversation regarding the tire repair. Shockingly, without warning, Smith brandished a firearm and shot Officer Hare, first through the passenger side window and then again as he walked to the driver's side. After the attack, Smith forced Hare into the passenger seat and made off in the stolen patrol car. The vehicle was abandoned shortly afterward.

Officer Justin Hare leaves behind grieving parents, a girlfriend, and two young children. Having graduated from police recruit school in 2018, Hare was dedicated to serving and protecting his community. The police chief expressed deep condolences to Hare's family, friends, and fellow officers during this devastating time.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has also shared her heartfelt condolences to the fallen officer's loved ones. The governor acknowledged Hare's sacrifice and vowed that every resource available would be utilized to bring his killer to justice.
