The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee has recently announced the pre-allocation spots for the highly anticipated 2024 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. In a chart released by the committee, the qualifying tournament allocations for each weight class are detailed.
These pre-allocations were determined based on the regular season performance of conference wrestlers through February 26. The committee used a sliding scale approach, considering three key standards: win percentage, coaches' rank, and RPI ranking. The minimum thresholds were set at a .700 winning percentage, a top 30 coaches' ranking, and a top 30 RPI ranking.
Using this approach, the committee allocated a maximum of 29 wrestlers per weight class. Wrestlers who met the threshold in at least two of the three categories secured a qualifying spot for their conference tournament in that particular weight class. Additionally, each conference received a minimum of one automatic qualification per weight class, which would be awarded to the tournament champion.
It is important to note that the allocation of the NCAA championship spots for each qualifying event will be based solely on place-finish at the conference tournaments. Once all the conference tournaments have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will convene in-person to select the remaining 47 at-large qualifiers.
The committee is scheduled to reveal these at-large qualifiers on March 12, while the brackets and seeding for the championships will be announced on NCAA.com at 8 p.m. on March 13. Excitement is building as wrestling enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the final lineup of 33 wrestlers in each weight class who will compete for the coveted NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships title.
