NBCUniversal introduces opt-out feature to enhance user privacy in online advertising
ICARO Media Group
The media company's online ad partners can now combine available personal information with data from various businesses to improve the relevancy of ads, as outlined in the company's Privacy Policy.
This new policy has raised questions regarding the potential "selling" or "sharing/processing" of personal information, which may be subject to specific laws governing targeted online advertising. For residents of states listed in NBCUniversal's Privacy Policy, individuals have the option to opt out of their personal information being sold or shared for targeted advertising purposes. However, it is important to note that choices related to cookies and device identifiers are specific to the brand's website or app being used.
Residents of the specified states can opt out of the selling or sharing/processing of personal information, such as cookies and device identifiers, by switching off the toggle button and clicking "Confirm My Choice." This will ensure that their information is not used for targeted advertising on the specific site or app being accessed.
For users outside of the designated states, this choice will not apply unless the system detects that they are located within the specified areas. If the toggle button is turned off, users will still see ads; however, these ads may be less relevant or based solely on NBCUniversal's own first-party information.
It is important to note that managing preferences and opt-out choices must be made separately for each site/app and on each browser/device used to access the services. Additionally, if cookies are cleared, users must renew their opt-out choice. Mobile app users can also adjust their geolocation permissions in their device settings.
To further protect user privacy, NBCUniversal is offering an Opt-Out Form for individuals who wish to opt out of the use of their email and other personal information related to targeted advertising activities. Users are encouraged to review the company's Cookie Notice, which provides additional details and can be found in the Privacy Policy accessible via the menu settings page.
NBCUniversal's new opt-out feature aims to enhance user privacy in online advertising by providing individuals with greater control over the use of their personal information. By offering these choices, the company is striving to strike a balance between personalized online experiences and user privacy concerns.
