The video was posted by TMZ and quickly gained widespread attention, prompting NBA spokesman Mike Bass to announce the renewed inquiry.
The five-and-a-half-minute surveillance footage, released early Sunday, shows Hayes pushing and spitting at Jamora. The video captures a particularly distressing moment when Hayes enters Jamora’s room, followed by loud crashing sounds and Jamora’s pleas for him to stop.
The incident dates back to July 2021, when Hayes was with the New Orleans Pelicans. Following the altercation in Los Angeles, police were called, and Hayes was arrested. He initially faced twelve misdemeanor charges, including three counts of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, two counts of domestic battery, and individual counts of battery against an officer, false imprisonment, vandalism, aggravated trespassing, and resisting arrest.
However, by February 2022, Hayes had pleaded no contest to misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment and resisting an officer, leading to the dismissal of the other ten charges. He received a sentence of three years' probation, 450 hours of community service, and a year of weekly domestic violence classes. The NBA had initially investigated the matter following his arrest but had taken no disciplinary action at that time.
The reopening of the investigation comes amidst new allegations in a lawsuit filed by Jamora's lawyers, which claims that Hayes compensated one of the officers involved in his arrest for undisclosed reasons.
In response, a spokesperson for Hayes expressed their commitment to cooperating with the new investigation, echoing their cooperation during the initial inquiry. The Lakers have also confirmed their willingness to work with the NBA on this matter. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Jamora stated that she welcomes the renewed investigation as a domestic violence victim and will fully cooperate.
