In a shocking incident on Monday, a 48-year-old U.S. Navy veteran was arrested after allegedly attempting to breach the gate at the FBI's Atlanta headquarters. The suspect, identified as Ervin Lee Bolling, rammed his orange Buick Encore into a wedge barrier just inside the facility's gate.

The motive behind Bolling's actions remains unknown, as FBI investigators have not shared any information regarding his suspected intentions. Following the incident, a bomb specialist conducted a thorough search of the vehicle, which was later towed away. However, it has not been revealed whether any explosives or weapons were discovered.

Bolling was apprehended by special agents at the scene and subsequently taken into custody by the DeKalb County police. He was later transported to the hospital, where he remained as of Tuesday, according to a spokesperson for the DeKalb police department.

The state of Georgia plans to charge Bolling with interference with government property, while he also faces a federal count of destroying government property. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Records indicate that Bolling resides in Easley, South Carolina, located just outside Greenville. He has been employed as an insurance broker at Bankers Life since 2018. Bolling is married and has three daughters, as stated on the Bankers Life website. However, his office phone went unanswered on Tuesday morning.

Bolling's social media presence reveals a tendency for expressing political opinions. On his publicly available Facebook page, he has posted videos critical of President Joe Biden and his administration. He has also expressed skepticism towards public safety measures aimed at combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Comparatively, Bolling's online political expressions are mild in comparison to Ricky Shiffer, a 42-year-old man who attempted to break into the FBI Cincinnati field office in August 2022. Shiffer, who wore body armor during the incident, was later killed in a shootout with Ohio state troopers. Previously, he had traveled to Washington, D.C., in January 2021 and had connections with far-right groups, including the Proud Boys.

In terms of Bolling's criminal history, public records indicate that he has only received a few speeding tickets. However, his brother, Michael Spencer Bolling, has been serving a prison sentence in North Carolina since August 2013 for robbing a pharmacy at gunpoint. Michael Bolling is projected to be released in August 2026.

The FBI's Chamblee facility has not disclosed specific details about its security protocols but reassured that operations were running as usual on Tuesday. Tony Thomas, an FBI spokesperson, emphasized that it was a normal day at the facility.

As the investigation continues, authorities will delve into Bolling's background and potential motivations behind his attempt to breach the FBI's Atlanta headquarters.
