In a recent incident, several passengers and crew members on a Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Dublin sustained injuries when the aircraft encountered turbulence over Turkey. According to Dublin airport authorities, at least six passengers and six crew members were injured on Qatar Airways flight QR017.
Thankfully, the aircraft was able to land safely at Dublin airport as scheduled before 1pm (12:00 GMT). Upon landing, emergency services, including airport police and the fire and rescue department, were present to assist. All passengers were assessed for injuries before disembarking the aircraft, and eight passengers were subsequently taken to a hospital in Dublin for further medical treatment.
Qatar Airways confirmed that the Boeing B787-9 aircraft from Doha to Dublin had indeed landed safely. The airline acknowledged that a small number of passengers and crew had sustained minor injuries and were receiving medical attention. An internal investigation into the incident has been initiated.
This occurrence follows another alarming incident in which a Singapore Airlines flight encountered severe turbulence, resulting in the death of a British man and numerous severe injuries. The aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing in Bangkok, Thailand. Health authorities have reported that 20 people remain in intensive care with spinal cord, brain, and skull injuries.
As a response to the recent turbulence incidents, Singapore Airlines has adopted a more cautious approach to managing turbulence during flight. The airline now restricts meal service when the seat belt sign is on and ensures that cabin crew secure all loose items and equipment during poor weather conditions. Passengers are also continuously advised to return to their seats and fasten their seat belts.
While air travel incidents causing injuries are rare, experts have warned about the potential impact of climate change on turbulence. Aircraft are designed to withstand severe turbulence; nevertheless, factors like increasing temperatures could lead to higher wind speeds, posing challenges for aviation safety.
According to the US Federal Aviation Administration, between 2009 and 2022, only 163 injuries in the United States, the world's largest air travel market, have required hospitalization. Furthermore, the US National Transportation Safety Board has not reported any turbulence-related deaths on large-body aircraft during this period.
With the growing concerns regarding turbulence incidents, airlines and aviation authorities are emphasizing the importance of passenger safety measures and increased awareness during flights to mitigate potential risks.
