Montgomery County Judge Shot by Son, Son in Custody

Montgomery County Judge Johnny Hardwick is in serious condition after being shot by his 36-year-old son, Khalfani Hardwick, on Saturday. The incident took place at Judge Hardwick's home around 1 p.m., resulting in him undergoing surgery for his injuries. Sheriff Derrick Cunningham confirmed that Khalfani Hardwick has been arrested and charged with domestic violence first degree and certain persons forbidden to possess a firearm.
Judge Hardwick, a circuit judge since 2001 and the current president of the Alabama Association of Circuit Court Judges, is well-respected in the community for his decades of service. Montgomery Mayor Steven L. Reed and Montgomery County Commission Chairman Doug Singleton have both expressed their support and well wishes for Judge Hardwick's recovery.
Khalfani Hardwick has a previous criminal history, having pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in 2017 for the attempted murder of Clayton Riley in 2014. He is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention facility without bond as the investigation continues.
