### Monro Inc. to Close 145 Stores Amidst Sales Decline
In a significant business decision, Monro Inc., the nation's second-largest automotive repair company, is set to close 145 of its stores across the United States. This decision comes after the company experienced a $5.2 million drop in sales, marking a 4.9% decrease in revenue for the 2025 fiscal year that ended on March 29.
Headquartered in Fairport, New York, Monro Inc. operates over 1,300 locations, including its flagship brand Monro Auto Service and Tire Centers as well as Mr. Tire Auto Service Centers. Company President and CEO Peter Fitzsimmons, who was appointed on March 31, highlighted the underperformance of more than 100 stores as a critical factor in the decision to close these locations.
During the latest earnings report, Fitzsimmons outlined four strategic goals aimed at boosting sales and earnings. These include improving customer experience and sales effectiveness, driving profitable customer acquisition, increasing merchandising productivity, and mitigating tariff risk. "While our improvement plan will take time to implement, I believe that we will drive enhanced profitability and increase operating income and total shareholder returns in fiscal 2026," he stated in a news release dated May 28.
The financial metrics presented in the release reflecting a downturn in the company’s performance were stark. Sales decreased by 6.4%, dropping from $1.277 billion in the 2024 fiscal year to $1.195 billion in 2025. Furthermore, the company reported a net loss of $5.2 million for fiscal 2025, a substantial contrast to the net income of $37.6 million recorded the previous year.
Monro’s decision to close these stores follows its announcement in June 2023 to sell its headquarters located in Rochester, New York. The move is part of a broader effort to streamline operations and combat declining sales. Founder Chuck August, who started the company with the opening of a Midas Muffler shop in 1957, had seen the brand expand significantly over the decades.
As of now, it remains unclear which specific locations will be shuttered. Monro Inc. continues to navigate through challenging economic conditions with hopes of reinvigorating its profitability in the upcoming fiscal year.
