In a surprising turn of events, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif has come forward to support all-rounder Hardik Pandya's candidacy for the T20I captaincy, following the announcement of Suryakumar Yadav as the captain for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. The decision also saw young batter Shubman Gill being named the new T20I vice-captain, ahead of Hardik, who had previously held the role during the victorious 2024 T20 World Cup campaign.

Expressing his opinion to IANS, Kaif stated that given Hardik's prior experience leading the T20I side, the selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, should have shown their support towards him. "Hardik has successfully captained the Gujarat Titans for two years, even reaching the final in the first year itself," Kaif said. "Additionally, he has experience as the vice-captain in the T20 World Cup. With a new coach in place, there will be fresh planning. While Suryakumar is a talented player with years of experience, I hope he will handle the captain's responsibility well. However, in my opinion, Hardik should have been backed."

Kaif also emphasized the importance of Gautam Gambhir's role as an experienced captain and coach, who understands cricket thoroughly. "I believe Hardik hasn't done anything wrong to not deserve the captaincy," Kaif added.

Highlighting Hardik's leadership credentials, Kaif mentioned that the all-rounder has previously captained India in three ODIs and 16 T20Is. In addition, he has led both the Gujarat Titans and the Mumbai Indians in the IPL, winning the championship with the former. "Leading a new team like the Gujarat Titans, with fresh and young faces, to a trophy is a significant achievement," Kaif said. "He has worked up from Ground Zero in the IPL, and I believe he was entitled to the captaincy. Let's wait and see how things unfold."

Kaif also speculated that fitness concerns may have been a factor in the selection panel's decision to not consider Hardik for the captaincy role. While acknowledging Suryakumar's stellar T20 record, Kaif reiterated his belief in Hardik's capabilities and expected him to be supported by the selection panel.

The debate surrounding the T20I captaincy continues as cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the outcome of the Sri Lanka tour and witness how the newly appointed captain and vice-captain fulfill their respective responsibilities.
