**MLB to Expand Local Game Coverage for Guardians, Brewers, and Twins in 2025**
In a significant move to enhance fan accessibility, Major League Baseball (MLB) announced it will take over the production and distribution of local games for the Cleveland Guardians, Milwaukee Brewers, and Minnesota Twins starting with the 2025 season. This strategy aims to increase viewing options for fans via television and digital streaming platforms.
The Texas Rangers have also decided to part ways with Diamond Sports Group and are exploring new local media avenues for their games starting in the 2025 season. This departure underscores a broader shift in how MLB is managing local broadcasts.
In the previous season, the Guardians’ regional sports network (RSN) had a reach of approximately 1.45 million households, while the Twins reached about 1.08 million homes. With MLB's new direct-to-consumer streaming service, Cleveland's potential audience could surge to around 4.86 million households, marking a 235% increase. Similarly, Minnesota is poised to expand its reach to roughly 4.40 million homes, a significant 307% growth. Milwaukee, which already had a direct-to-consumer streaming option, will continue to leverage this platform under MLB’s management.
This initiative mirrors MLB’s operational model for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, and San Diego Padres in the 2024 season. MLB secured cable and satellite broadcast agreements while providing streaming options via Dbacks.TV, Padres.TV, and Rockies.TV.
Noah Garden, MLB Deputy Commissioner, Business and Media, stated, "With the media landscape continuing to evolve, Major League Baseball is committed to serving our fans by ensuring they can see their favorite Clubs, removing blackouts where we can, and ultimately growing the reach of our games."
The local game productions by MLB are noted for their high-quality broadcasts, incorporating features typically found in nationally televised games, such as Ump Cam, live look-ins to the MLB Replay Operations Center, and in-game player interviews. Billy Chambers, MLB Executive Vice President, Local Media, emphasized the league's commitment to using new technology and improved broadcast quality to enhance the viewing experience.
MLB Network, which has been in operation since 2009 and garnered 42 National Sports Emmy Awards, will be integral in these new broadcasting efforts. The league has a proven track record in digital streaming, dating back to the live-streaming of its first regular season game in 2002. In 2024, fans streamed a record 14.5 billion minutes of live baseball games and content on MLB.TV.
Further details on how fans can access these games will be provided as the 2025 season approaches.
