**Soto's Free Agency Heats Up: Five Teams Submit Offers Ahead of Winter Meetings**
The market for a prominent hitter in Major League Baseball is heating up, especially with Juan Soto attracting significant attention. While the pitching market has started to show some activity with Blake Snell and Yusei Kikuchi securing deals, Soto remains the most sought-after bat in the free agency scene.
Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media reports that five clubs have placed their bids for Soto: the Yankees, Mets, Blue Jays, Red Sox, and Dodgers. Though there have been conflicting reports on whether all these offers are formally submitted, this group appears to be the frontrunners vying for Soto's talents.
Ronald Blum from the Associated Press noted that Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, requested initial offers by Thanksgiving. As such, if any of these teams haven't formally submitted an offer yet, it's likely they will do so imminently. Blum also highlights the growing anticipation that Soto could make a decision as soon as the Winter Meetings, scheduled from December 8-11 in Dallas.
This wave of initial offers is far from the final round. Brendan Kuty of The Athletic remarked that these initial offers are preliminary, with another round of increased bids expected next week. Negotiations will intensify, and some teams will likely be eliminated as the Winter Meetings approach. Kuty, similar to Blum, suggests these meetings as a potential deadline for Soto's decision.
Interestingly, the Los Angeles Dodgers, despite being in the mix, might be the least likely to secure Soto. This was likely even before they signed a five-year deal with Blake Snell worth $182 million, including a substantial $52 million signing bonus. ESPN's Jeff Passan previously reported that the Dodgers aren’t expected to pursue Soto aggressively, a sentiment echoed by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Rosenthal suggests that the Dodgers might be strategizing to drive up Soto's price for serious contenders like New York, Boston and Toronto.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post emphasized the seriousness of the Red Sox in pursuing Soto. They are leveraging their history with prominent left-handed hitters and have enlisted legends Pedro Martinez and David Ortiz to appeal to Soto, who hails from the Dominican Republic. Furthermore, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports that the Red Sox are committed to simultaneously pursuing a top-tier starting pitcher, alongside Soto, without being constrained by the $241 million luxury tax threshold. The Sox are currently $70 million below this level.
While other teams could still join the race, it remains uncertain. Phillies owner John Middleton mentioned an interest in being a "stalking horse" for Soto earlier in the winter. However, USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Phillies have not yet had any discussions with Boras about Soto. Similarly, the Giants, once speculated to be in the running, have not yet engaged with Soto and may be scaling back on aggressive spending.
As the Winter Meetings approach, the anticipation surrounding Soto's decision is building. With initial offers in and more negotiations expected, MLB fans and teams alike are eagerly waiting to see where this high-profile free agent will land.
