In the latest of a series of incidents involving gambling in Major League Baseball (MLB), umpire Pat Hoberg has been disciplined by the league after being investigated for a potential violation of MLB's sports betting policies. This marks the second notable betting incident the MLB has dealt with in the past month.

The investigation into Hoberg, aged 37, was initiated during spring training, resulting in his removal from the field of play. While the exact nature of the discipline imposed on Hoberg has not been announced, he has not umpired any games this season. The Athletic was the first to report on Hoberg's disciplinary action.

MLB's investigation did not reveal whether Hoberg had bet on baseball games. However, it did conclude that there was no evidence to suggest that any games officiated by Hoberg were compromised or manipulated in any way. Nonetheless, MLB determined that disciplinary action was warranted.

In response to the decision, Hoberg has chosen to appeal the determination made by MLB. In a statement provided to USA Today, Hoberg expressed his appeal and emphasized the importance of baseball's integrity to him. He also acknowledged the support he is receiving from the Major League Baseball Umpires Association throughout the appeal process.

CNN has made unsuccessful attempts to reach both the MLB Umpires Association and Hoberg for further comment on the matter.

Hoberg began umpiring Major League games during spring training in 2014 and was promoted to the full-time Major League umpiring staff in 2017.

This disciplinary action comes shortly after the MLB handed a lifetime ban to San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano for betting on baseball games. Additionally, four other players were suspended for a year each for violating betting rules. Similar to Hoberg's case, the MLB investigation found no evidence to suggest that any outcomes of games on which Marcano placed bets were compromised.

As Hoberg's appeal is pending, MLB has stated that they are unable to comment further until the conclusion of the appeal process.
