MLB Awards Week is in full swing, bringing excitement to baseball fans eager to see the season’s top performers honored. This period, which takes place before the MLB hot stove season, helps keep fans engaged with the sport. Already, we've seen recipients of the Gold Glove Awards, Silver Sluggers, and the All-MLB Team. Now, the focus shifts to the major accolades determined by the Baseball Writers' Association of America, which promise to leave a significant mark on baseball history and future Hall of Fame résumés. The winners are announced live each night on MLB Network at 6 p.m. ET.
The week kicked off on Monday with the Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award being bestowed upon two standout starting pitchers. Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates took home the National League honors, while Luis Gil of the New York Yankees celebrated his achievement in the American League.
As the accolades continued to pour in, Stephen Vogt of the Cleveland Guardians and Pat Murphy of the Milwaukee Brewers were named the 2024 Managers of the Year on Tuesday. Their respective accomplishments in the American League and National League have been widely praised.
Wednesday saw dominant pitchers Tarik Skubal and Chris Sale capturing the coveted Cy Young awards. Skubal, an ace for the Detroit Tigers, secured his first Cy Young award, while Sale’s remarkable comeback season with the Atlanta Braves earned him the prestigious title as well.
Further intrigue surrounded the MVP races, especially in the American League. Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Bobby Witt Jr. of the Kansas City Royals displayed historically elite performances. Judge's league-leading statistics, including 58 homers, 144 RBIs, and a .322 batting average, made a compelling case for his MVP candidacy.
Meanwhile, in the National League, Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers stood out with a .310 batting average, .390 on-base percentage, .646 slugging percentage, 54 home runs, and 59 stolen bases, solidifying his dominance without even having to don a glove this season.
The excitement doesn’t end there, as Thursday and Friday will continue unveiling top honors in several categories. This year's MLB Awards Week has certainly set the stage for lively debates and celebrations among baseball enthusiasts.
