In a move to address player concerns, Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Rob Manfred has announced that changes will be made to the new uniforms unveiled this season, in partnership with Nike, the league's official uniform supplier. The modifications will take effect for the 2025 season.
Player feedback played a crucial role in driving these changes, with Manfred emphasizing the importance of hearing the voices of the players and clubs. "Player and club feedback is extremely important to us," said Manfred in a statement. "Together with Nike, we listened to our players and, as a result, we are addressing their concerns."
During spring training, several complaints were raised about the new uniforms, including see-through pants and a perceived lack of quality, which some players criticized as "cheap." In March, the New York Yankees made headlines when fans could observe the players' sweat stains through their uniforms. The issue resurfaced last month when Detroit Tigers left fielder, Riley Greene, split his pants while sliding into home plate during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
According to the MLB's website, discussions about uniform changes with Nike and Fanatics began in 2018. The redesigned uniforms were intended to offer 25% more stretch and dry 28% faster. Nike took responsibility for the design, while Fanatics handled the production.
Addressing the primary concerns voiced by players, MLB will focus on implementing larger lettering on the back of jerseys and allow for "individual pant customization." They will also work to resolve the discoloration caused by players sweating.
In the meantime, MLB is working on finding an immediate solution to the "slight color difference" between pants and jerseys for teams wearing gray uniforms. The updated uniforms for these teams are expected to be available by the second half of the season.
"We will continue to work with Nike to make adjustments with the goal of delivering a uniform that looks good and helps MLB players perform at their best," added Commissioner Manfred.
The collaborative efforts between MLB, Nike, and Fanatics demonstrate the league's commitment to listening to player concerns and ensuring that uniforms meet the desired standards of comfort, functionality, and visual appeal. By addressing these issues, MLB aims to enhance both the player experience on the field and the overall aesthetics of the game for fans.
