Hiker Missing on Longs Peak in Rocky Mountain National Park Amidst Severe Weather
A 23-year-old hiker identified as Lucas Macaj from Colorado Springs has gone missing while attempting to scale Longs Peak, the tallest peak in Rocky Mountain National Park. According to the National Park Service (NPS), Macaj was last heard from on Sunday afternoon when he sent a text to a friend stating that he had reached the summit.
Significant storms moved through the high elevations of the park later that day, hampering search efforts. Macaj's vehicle was discovered at the Longs Peak Trailhead on Monday morning, after he was reported missing the previous night.
Despite ongoing search operations, the inclement weather conditions have posed challenges for the rescue teams. Strong winds, white-out conditions, and low visibility impeded search efforts on Tuesday.
The NPS has utilized various resources in their search for Macaj, including heat-sensing fixed-wing flights and ground teams on the Longs Peak Trail and the Ledges on the Keyhole Route. The Boulder Brook Trail has also been searched, while air reconnaissance missions have focused on key areas such as The Ledges, The Trough, The Narrows, The Homestretch, and the saddle between Longs Peak and Mount Meeker.
Macaj is described as a 5-feet 9-inches tall individual with brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark-colored top, tan or brown pants, khaki-colored boots, and a black backpack. Authorities also stated that he may be wearing a beanie and dark-colored gloves.
Attempting to summit Longs Peak via the Keyhole Route can be treacherous, as the NPS warns of winter-like conditions and the need for advanced skills and judgment. Hikers are advised to be prepared to turn back during sudden and drastic weather changes.
Search and rescue operations will continue as authorities endeavor to locate Lucas Macaj and ensure his safe return.
