ATHENS, Greece - A tragic discovery was made on the small Greek island of Mathraki, as the body of a missing American tourist was found on a remote beach, local media reports. The tourist had been reported missing by his Greek-American friend after he was last seen at a cafe in the company of two female tourists.

The body of the man, identified as retired Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Albert Calibet of Hermosa Beach, California, was discovered on Sunday by another tourist on a rocky beach on Mathraki. The 1.2-square-mile heavily wooded island, located west of Corfu, has a population of just 100 residents.

Sadly, this incident is the latest in a series of recent cases involving the deaths or disappearances of tourists on Greek islands. Many of these cases have occurred when tourists ventured out on hikes in scorching temperatures. On Saturday, a 74-year-old Dutch tourist was found in a ravine close to where he was last seen, struggling to walk in the blistering heat.

In another tragic incident, Dr. Michael Mosley, a renowned British television presenter and author, was found dead on the island of Symi. A coroner determined that he died shortly after embarking on a challenging hike over rugged terrain.

Adding to the growing list of missing tourists, two French tourists were reported missing on the secluded Cyclades island of Sikinos, while authorities continue to search for a 59-year-old tourist who went missing during a solo hike on Amorgos island.

The series of incidents has sparked concern among authorities and locals, prompting an urgent call for caution when exploring the Greek islands, especially during extreme weather conditions. Greek authorities are actively working to enhance safety measures and ensure the well-being of all visitors.

As investigations continue into the death of Albert Calibet and the other disturbing incidents, it serves as a reminder for tourists to take appropriate precautions, stay hydrated, and let someone know about their plans when venturing out into unfamiliar territories.

The loss of a life is always tragic, and our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
