Vikings Sign Veteran QB Brett Rypien, Waive Jaren Hall
EAGAN, Minn. - In a surprising move, the Minnesota Vikings have made a change in their third quarterback position on the 53-man roster. The team announced on Thursday the signing of experienced quarterback Brett Rypien, while waiving second-year pro Jaren Hall.
Rypien, who has spent five seasons in the NFL, joins the Vikings after a brief stint with the Chicago Bears during the 2024 offseason. Before that, he had played for several teams including the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, and New York Jets.
The former Boise State QB entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Broncos and has since played in 10 NFL games, making four starts. Rypien showcased his skills in the 2020 season when he made his first career start and led the Broncos to a 37-28 victory over the Jets, throwing for a career-high 242 passing yards and two touchdowns.
During the 2023 season, Rypien made appearances with the Rams and later joined the Jets' active roster. His journey has now led him to Minnesota, where he will provide depth to the Vikings' quarterback lineup.
Meanwhile, the Vikings bid farewell to Jaren Hall, who joined the team as a fifth-round pick in 2023. Hall made two starts for Minnesota during his rookie season but unfortunately suffered a concussion during the game against the Atlanta Falcons and had to leave early. He also started in the Week 17 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.
The signing of Brett Rypien adds experience and depth to the Vikings' quarterback room, alongside starters Kirk Cousins and Kellen Mond. It remains to be seen how Rypien will fit into the team's offensive scheme and whether he will have the opportunity to make an impact on the field.
As the Vikings make their final preparations for the upcoming season, this roster move demonstrates their commitment to strengthening all areas of the team in order to compete at the highest level. Fans will eagerly watch as the Vikings take the field with their revamped quarterback lineup, hoping for a successful campaign in the 2024 NFL season.
