In an effort to strengthen their roster, the New York Mets have made a significant roster move by adding newly acquired outfielder Jesse Winker to the 26-man roster. Outfielder D.J. Stewart, unfortunately, became the odd man out and has been officially optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday morning.

The transfer of Kodai Senga to the 60-day IL was necessary to clear space for Winker on the 40-man roster. Senga's move allows the Mets to accommodate Winker, who will now wear the number 3 on his jersey.

Stewart, at 30 years old, had some standout moments for the Mets in 2023, hitting 11 home runs and maintaining an impressive. 840 OPS. However, this season has been a struggle for him. In 71 games, Stewart has seen a significant drop in his performance, slashing just. 172/.326/.298. His power numbers have also dipped, hitting only five home runs in 187 plate appearances, compared to his performance last season when he had just 185 plate appearances.

On the other hand, Winker is eagerly looking forward to playing for his new team, whom he is familiar with. Speaking to reporters inside the Mets clubhouse, Winker expressed his excitement about joining such a talented team that he has faced as an opponent in the past. "Once I found out that I was coming here, I was extremely excited. It's such a great team," Winker said. "Obviously, I've been in the opposing dugout, and so I'm just excited to be a part of it."

Manager Carlos Mendoza sees great potential in Winker and stated that while he may not be an everyday player, the veteran will receive ample opportunities, especially against right-handed pitching. Winker's versatility allows him to play both corner outfield positions and provide options as a designated hitter and pinch-hitter.

Mendoza acknowledged the impact of Winker's addition to the team, highlighting his left-handed bat and impressive control of the strike zone, as well as his power. "He's going to help," Mendoza said, emphasizing the significance of the move for the team.

As the Mets continue their impressive run this season, the addition of Jesse Winker brings depth and versatility to their outfield lineup. With Winker's previous experience against the team, his arrival is sure to add an exciting dynamic to the clubhouse and enhance the Mets' chances of continued success.
