In a disappointing turn of events for the New York Mets, it has been revealed that outfielder J.D. Martinez will not be available for their crucial four-game divisional series against the Atlanta Braves starting on Monday. Martinez, who signed with the Mets during Spring Training, has experienced "overall body soreness" during his preparation and is not ready to make his debut in Major League games.

According to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, Martinez has been feeling the effects of a quick ramp-up in his training, with a significant number of at-bats on the back fields. However, his recent transition to real game situations has caused further discomfort, necessitating more time for recovery. The team had initially hoped for Martinez's return on Sunday, but they quickly decided against it.

Having signed a $12 million contract just before the regular season began, Martinez agreed to start in the Minor Leagues in order to bring his body into peak condition. However, his return to the Major Leagues has been further delayed, with Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals and a subsequent six-game homestand against the Pirates being the earliest potential debut dates.

Mendoza acknowledged that Martinez's delayed return was anticipated, considering his late arrival to Spring Training and the substantial amount of time needed to adjust both physically and mechanically. Martinez spent the first week of the regular season gaining plate appearances in controlled environments at the Mets' Spring Training complex. He made his debut as a designated hitter for Single-A St. Lucie on Friday and Saturday, recording one hit and a walk in eight plate appearances. However, the soreness he experienced afterwards led to scheduled off-days on Sunday and Monday, with his return to Minor League action set for Tuesday.

Mendoza emphasized that Martinez's issue lies primarily in muscle recovery, rather than timing at the plate. The 36-year-old outfielder has been feeling confident in his mechanics and has no plans to practice outfield reps in the Minors. Mendoza attributed Martinez's current soreness to the demanding nature of Spring Training, particularly during the second week when players engage in longer days and more activities.

The Mets had high hopes of Martinez's contribution to their struggling offense, which ranks poorly in several key statistical categories. However, with the outfielder's absence, they will need to rely on other players to step up during the divisional showdown against the Braves.

Mendoza revealed that the team has been in constant communication with Martinez, carefully considering his feedback alongside their own assessments. Their priority is to avoid rushing him back into action and risking any potential injury. "We're just starting to get to know the player now," Mendoza remarked.

It remains to be seen when Martinez will finally make his much-anticipated debut for the Mets. In the meantime, the team must find ways to improve their offensive production and overcome the absence of their seasoned outfielder.

Overall, the Mets will face a challenging task as they kick off their series against the Braves without Martinez in their lineup. Fans will anxiously await updates on his progress and hope for his speedy recovery to bring a much-needed boost to the team's struggling offense.
