The New York Mets have made a roster move, announcing on Wednesday that they have designated right-hander Matt Festa for assignment. Taking his place on the active roster will be right-hander Christian Scott, who is being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start today's game.
Festa, 31, joined the Mets on a minor league deal back in May and had impressive numbers in Triple-A before his promotion. In 15 1/3 innings, he recorded a stellar 1.76 ERA, with a strikeout rate of 32.2% and a walk rate of 5.1%. However, his lone appearance at the major league level did not go as planned. In just one inning of work, Festa gave up five runs, four of which were earned, along with four hits and a walk. This outing inflated his career ERA from 4.32 to 4.66 in 93 2/3 innings.
Festa, a former seventh-round pick, has a history of injuries that have impacted his career. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2020, causing him to miss the entire season and a significant portion of the 2021 campaign. Prior to his surgery, Festa had played for the Seattle Mariners, appearing in two seasons (2018-2019), and returned to the big leagues in 2022-2023 after completing his rehab. In addition to his ERA, he has maintained a strong strikeout rate of 25.1%, although his walk rate of 10.9% is slightly higher than the league average. Festa's average fastball velocity is also considered average at 92.6 mph.
Apart from his time in the Mets' Triple-A club, Festa also had a decent stint with the San Diego Padres' top affiliate in El Paso after signing a minor league deal in the offseason. In 16 innings, he allowed eight runs, with a 21.6% strikeout rate and a 9.5% walk rate. His performance was hindered by a .360 batting average on balls in play.
With Festa now designated for assignment, the Mets have five days to trade him or place him on outright waivers before potentially losing him. Any team that acquires or claims Festa would need to add him to their major league roster since he has no minor league options remaining. However, being outrighted before in 2020, Festa has the right to reject a Triple-A assignment if he clears waivers.
The Mets are hoping that the call-up of Christian Scott, who has shown promise in Triple-A, will provide a boost to their pitching staff. Festa's departure opens up an opportunity for Scott to prove his worth at the major league level.
