**Lions' Defensive Strategies Shine in Absence of Za'Darius Smith**

In the latest game, the Detroit Lions showcased a blend of traditional and modern defensive techniques, effectively compensating for the absence of Za'Darius Smith. Lions' player, Onwuzurike, was notably utilized as a defensive end, participating in 39 edge snaps and 19 inside. Additionally, the Lions employed more pass-rushing or "box" SAM linebacker sets.

Jermaine Houston had a standout performance, delivering his best game in over a year, generating three pressures, securing a sack, and coming close to another. Although he was limited to just 16 snaps, his impact on the field was significant. With continuous strong performance, Houston may receive more playing time. Similarly, Muhammad, despite having a comparable snap count, demonstrated his prowess in setting the edge, a crucial defensive aspect not always reflected in the statistics.

McNeill played a pivotal role by producing four pressures and recording a sack. His ability to collapse the pocket constantly disrupted Texans' quarterback C.J. Stroud. Although Reader's contributions didn't reflect in the statistics, his efforts in freeing up space for others were noteworthy. Wingo and O'Connor predominantly played inside, with O'Connor notably registering a sack despite Wingo's higher snap count.

Both Anzalone and Campbell were defensive mainstays, remaining on the field throughout the game. Campbell's recent performance, especially against the run, has merited additional playing time. Nowaske's 26 of 33 snaps in the "box" SAM role, predominantly helpful in the run defense, and Niemann's 20 traditional off-the-ball SAM snaps, highlight the evolving linebacker strategy. This approach mirrors recent utilizations of Malcolm Rodriguez's role.

Across the game, Lions deployed a three-linebacker set with a "box" SAM about 38% of the snaps, two off-the-ball linebacker sets around 33%, and traditional three off-the-ball linebacker sets approximately 29% of the time. Employing the "box" SAM primarily for edge setting and run-stopping proved to be a successful strategy for the Lions in this match.
