The scheme is estimated to have taken place a staggering 16,000 times, with Apple incurring losses of at least $12.3 million as a result. The returned devices encompassed a wide range of Apple products, including thousands of iPhones, iPads, and other devices. The indictment reveals that the fraud operated between December 2014 and March 2024, with collaboration from groups in China responsible for sourcing the counterfeit devices.

To make the fake iPhones appear authentic, the scammers used stolen identification numbers, making them seem like genuine Apple products sold in the US and covered by AppleCare warranty. Regrettably, this criminal activity potentially hindered legitimate customers from claiming warranty repairs, as Apple's systems had already processed the model identifiers previously.

In a bid to cover their tracks, the co-conspirators devised various tactics. They visited multiple Apple retail stores across California, sometimes up to ten stores in a single day, claiming repairs under fake aliases and using fabricated addresses. They also resorted to renting PO boxes to further deceive authorities.

The case is now heading to trial, and if found guilty, the defendants could face significant prison time for the 22 charges leveled against them. These charges include wire fraud, mail fraud, aggravated identity theft, and the trafficking of counterfeit goods.

Apple, renowned for its commitment to product quality and customer satisfaction, has yet to comment on the situation. The discovery of this extensive fraud scheme serves as a stark reminder that even multinational corporations can fall victim to sophisticated and large-scale scams perpetuated by determined individuals.
