Massachusetts Authorities Investigating Fatal Fire at Newton Duplex Resulting in One Death

Newton Fire Chief Greg Gentile provided details about the incident, stating that the fire department received numerous phone calls regarding a house fire at 1243 Walnut St., located at the intersection of Walnut and Boylston streets, around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Reports indicate that the first 911 call was made by an off-duty Boston firefighter who witnessed the blazing duplex while driving along Route 9. Upon arrival at the scene, the Newton firefighters observed intense flames originating from the first floor of the two-family residence, as described by Gentile. First responders were informed that there might still be someone inside the burning home.
In a swift and aggressive response, the Newton firefighters initiated a primary search and combat strategy. During the search, they tragically discovered a male victim. Despite their efforts, the victim succumbed to their injuries. Chief Gentile expressed deep sympathy, acknowledging the difficult nature of this incident and assuring that necessary resources would be provided to all affected individuals.
Fortunately, there were no additional occupants found inside the home. It was confirmed that all other individuals were able to safely evacuate the house on their own, according to Chief Gentile. The cause and origin of the fire are now being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police, Newton Police Department, and Newton Fire Investigation Unit.
