"While attempting to use the word 'bugaboo' in a hearing, I used a phrase that is offensive," Trone acknowledged. "That word has a long dark terrible history. It should never be used any time, anywhere, in any conversation. I recognize that as a white man, I have privilege. And as an elected official, I have a responsibility for the words I use - especially in the heat of the moment. Regardless of what I meant to say, I shouldn't have used that language."

Trone's apology highlights his understanding of the significance and impact of the racial slur, acknowledging the need for constant vigilance when engaging in public discourse.

The congressman's Senate candidacy adds further context to the incident. Trone is vying for the Democratic nomination in the race to succeed retiring Senator Ben Cardin. One of his opponents in the nomination race is Angela Alsobrooks, the current chief executive of Prince George's County. Alsobrooks, who is running to become the first Black U.S. senator from Maryland, presents a formidable challenge to Trone's aspirations.
