Authorities have identified 26-year-old Jose Antonio Ibarra as the suspect in the death of 22-year-old nursing student Laken Riley. Riley's body was discovered on Thursday at the University of Georgia's Intramural Fields after she didn't return from a jog, prompting a 911 call from a concerned friend.
During a press conference held on Friday, Chief Jeff Clark revealed that Ibarra, who is originally from Venezuela and not a U.S. citizen, was caught on campus security cameras, leading to his identification as Riley's killer. It is believed that the motive behind the crime remains unclear, with Clark suggesting it was a crime of opportunity.
Clark confirmed that Ibarra had recently moved to Athens from Venezuela but did not attend the University of Georgia, emphasizing that there was no prior connection between him and Riley. Ibarra has been denied bond following his arrest, which took place on Saturday.
