During its Technology & Manufacturing Day event, electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Lucid made a bold statement about its upcoming Gravity electric SUV, calling it "the best SUV ever." Led by CEO Peter Rawlinson, the event showcased Lucid's commitment to pushing the boundaries of EV technology and performance.

One of the standout features of the Gravity SUV is the inclusion of an NACS port, which will provide access to over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers. This strategic move ensures that Lucid owners will have a vast charging network at their disposal, allowing for convenient and swift recharging opportunities.

Rawlinson highlighted how Lucid's focus on advanced technologies will result in significant overall weight reduction for the Gravity SUV, leading to improved efficiency and performance. This breakthrough innovation will open up new possibilities for Lucid as the company expands its presence in the market.

Lucid also took the opportunity to introduce its new Atlas drive unit during the event. This next-generation drive unit, designed to power Lucid's upcoming midsize EV platform, promises to be even more advanced and efficient than its predecessor. With smaller size and increased energy efficiency, the new drive unit will bolster the vehicle's range while minimizing energy consumption.

The Gravity SUV represents a pivotal moment for Lucid, as it lays the foundation for the company's ambitious plans to launch three new lower-cost electric models on the same platform. These models include a midsize electric SUV directly challenging Tesla's Model Y, an electric sedan to rival the Model 3, and potentially an off-road-focused EV.

While Lucid's current technology is already "years ahead of the competition," according to Rawlinson, the next-generation drive units demonstrate the company's dedication to staying at the forefront of the EV market. Lucid's proprietary tech stack, complemented by advanced software, allows for precise control of torque vectoring, traction control, and battery management, truly unlocking the full potential of their drive units.

Lucid confirmed that the Gravity SUV will be equipped with a NACS charging port starting in 2025, providing access to Tesla Superchargers. The SUV is expected to offer seating for up to seven passengers and their belongings, all while maintaining the high standards of performance and efficiency that Lucid has become known for.

Following the launch of the Gravity SUV, Lucid plans to roll out a series of lower-cost EVs on a new midsize platform, with production expected to commence in late 2026. These future offerings aim to make EVs more accessible to a wider range of consumers, while still incorporating Lucid's advanced technology and energy efficiency.

Lucid's commitment to advanced technology is further demonstrated by the recent rollout of its UX 2.4 software update, offering new features such as 3D lane visualization and lane change assist. The update is part of Lucid's transition to its in-house proprietary stack, setting the stage for future enhancements and improvements.

As Lucid prepares to deliver its highly anticipated Gravity electric SUV to customers later this year, the company's continuous pursuit of technological advancement solidifies its position as a frontrunner in the EV industry. Whether the Gravity will live up to Rawlinson's claim of being the "best SUV ever" remains to be seen, but Lucid's remarkable progress thus far suggests that it is certainly poised to redefine the market.
