**Blake Snell Joins Dodgers with Massive $182 Million Deal after a Rocky Season with Giants**
In a surprising turn of events, former San Francisco Giants pitcher Blake Snell has agreed to a lucrative five-year, $182 million contract with the reigning world champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Snell, who hinted at the monumental deal on his Instagram late Tuesday night, is set to become a significant new asset for the Dodgers. This move follows a tumultuous season with the Giants, marked by injuries and inconsistent performances.
The contract includes a $52 million signing bonus, while Snell will defer $60 million of his salary, as reported by Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times. Quite intriguingly, this deal means that the Giants could end up paying Snell more money in 2026 than the Dodgers, due to a unique clause in his previous contract with San Francisco.
When Snell signed with the Giants in mid-March, a deferred $17 million signing bonus to be paid in January 2026 was part of the arrangement. This clause ensures that Snell will receive a paycheck from the Giants even after completing his first full season with the Dodgers. Throughout 2024, Snell earned a $15 million salary from the Giants, adding another layer of financial complexity to his transition.
Initially, Snell's time with the Giants did not go as planned. Battling an adductor strain and a groin injury, he spent much of the early season either out of the rotation or struggling on the mound, which saw his ERA soar to 9.51 in just 23.2 innings over his first six starts. However, upon his return to the majors in July, Snell transformed, showcasing the stellar form that won him the 2023 NL Cy Young Award. He finished his Giants stint with a 5-0 record in his final 14 starts, boasting a 1.23 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 80.1 innings, and even achieved his first career no-hitter on August 2 in Cincinnati.
Despite receiving interest from other teams, the then-president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, decided to hold onto Snell at the trade deadline, believing in the strength of the Giants' rotation. Unfortunately, while Snell performed admirably, the rest of the team could not keep up, leading to another disappointing season for the Giants.
With Zaidi now replaced by Buster Posey, the Giants must navigate the implications of Snell's contract, including a loss of their third-round pick in the 2024 MLB Draft and a significant reduction in their international bonus pool money. Additionally, they will likely face Snell up to four times a year as he dons the Dodgers' jersey.
Despite these challenging circumstances, the Giants can find a silver lining in Madison Bumgarner potentially returning to the organization, providing some optimism for their future endeavors.
