In a tragic incident on Saturday afternoon, a Long Island doctor lost her life after falling out of a moving trailer while on her way to witness the eclipse. According to New York state troopers, 58-year-old Dr. Monika Woroniecka, a specialist in children's allergy and immunology, was on a family road trip when the accident occurred on State Route 12E in Watertown.
The unfortunate incident took place at around 3 p.m. as the family was travelling north to view the eclipse. Dr. Woroniecka's husband was driving the 2019 Dodge Ram that was towing their 2024 Airstream trailer when the wind caused the trailer's passenger side door to swing open unexpectedly. Shocked witnesses reported seeing Dr. Woroniecka clinging onto the door handle before losing her grip and being thrown out of the Airstream.
Tragically, she struck her head on the shoulder of the roadway as she was ejected from the moving trailer. First responders rushed her to Samaritan Medical Center's emergency room, but despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after being admitted.
State police are currently investigating the circumstances that led to this devastating tragedy. Trooper Jack Keller of the New York State Police explained that they are working to determine whether the door was left ajar or was forced open by the wind. It is unclear whether Dr. Woroniecka was attempting to close the door before the incident or if she was caught off-guard by the sudden opening. Keller emphasized that it is still too early to draw any definitive conclusions.
Dr. Monika Woroniecka had been employed at Stony Brook Medicine since the early 2000s, as mentioned on the hospital's website. Her bio highlighted her expertise in treating childhood allergies, asthma, and skin conditions, in addition to evaluating children for immunity disorders and frequent infections. Fluent in Polish, Dr. Woroniecka had attracted Polish-speaking families from far distances seeking her care.
Stony Brook Medicine expressed profound sadness at the loss of Dr. Woroniecka and extended their condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues. A dedicated physician at Stony Brook Children's Hospital, her vibrant personality, love for travel, hiking, exercise, and spending time with loved ones will be deeply missed.
