Renowned pop star and Grammy winner, Lizzo, sent shockwaves through social media on Friday night with a cryptic post stating, "I QUIT." The enigmatic statement, shared on Instagram, caused fans and the public alike to speculate about the nature of her announcement.
The timing of Lizzo's declaration came immediately after her performance at a fundraiser for President Biden. However, the booking of her appearance drew criticism from Ron Zambrano, an attorney representing the dancers who had filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the pop star. The attorney labeled the booking as "shameful," given the pending charges.
Expressing frustration, Lizzo shared her feelings of being constantly dragged by people in her personal life and online. She expressed her desire to simply make music, make people happy, and contribute to making the world a better place. However, she also felt disheartened, feeling that the world may not want her in it.
The Grammy-winning artist further expressed her dissatisfaction with the numerous false narratives circulating about her, as well as the body shaming she has endured. Lizzo voiced her dismay at her character being dissected by individuals who she feels don't truly know her while highlighting the disrespect she feels towards her name.
Despite Lizzo's statement, it remains uncertain about what exactly she is quitting. Speculation ranges from abandoning her music career to retreating from the public eye or even stepping away from social media.
The controversy surrounding Lizzo extends back to August 2021 when three of her former touring dancers, Crystal Williams, Arianna Davis, and Noelle Rodriguez, filed a lawsuit against her. The dancers alleged sexual harassment, workplace hostility, assault, and discrimination surrounding both the production of Prime Video's "Watch Out for the Big Grrrls" and Lizzo's recent Special Tour. Lizzo's production company, Big Grrrl Big Touring, Inc., and dance team captain, Shirlene Quigley, were also named as defendants in the lawsuit.
Lizzo vehemently denied the accusations when they surfaced, deeming them too outrageous not to address. The lawsuit was scheduled for a jury trial in February, but Lizzo filed an appeal in early March, effectively postponing proceedings for several months.
As of now, Lizzo's intentions and future plans remain uncertain. Her fans and the public anxiously await further clarifications from the multifaceted artist.
