ICARO Media Group
Lionsgate Studios has announced a significant distribution deal for the highly anticipated film "Megalopolis," directed by the legendary Francis Ford Coppola. Following its premiere at Cannes last month, Lionsgate will release the $120 million epic production in theaters across the United States on September 27.
Under the agreement, Lionsgate will handle the wide theatrical release of "Megalopolis," while Coppola, through his production company American Zoetrope, will retain ownership of the film. This partnership is not the first for Lionsgate and American Zoetrope, as the studio has previously released director's cuts of some of Coppola's other acclaimed works including "Apocalypse Now Final Cut," "The Conversation," and "The Cotton Club Encore."
The star-studded ensemble cast of "Megalopolis" includes Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Jon Voight, and Shia LaBeouf, among others. Notably, the film will feature a unique live-bit that involves an actual actor stepping in front of the screen, aiming to enhance the immersive experience, particularly on Imax screens.
During its Cannes premiere, "Megalopolis" received a standing ovation that lasted for seven minutes, preceded by a three-minute-plus standing ovation for Coppola himself. The film currently holds a 52% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In addition to the domestic release, Lionsgate will also handle the distribution of "Megalopolis" across all home entertainment platforms. This means that audiences will be able to enjoy the film in the comfort of their own homes, alongside its theatrical release.
The distribution rights for "Megalopolis" have already been secured for various international territories, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, and several others. These deals were overseen by Barry Hirsch of Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum Matlof + Fishman, who is not only Coppola's producer but also his long-time lawyer.
Expressing his excitement about the collaboration, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair, Adam Fogelson, praised Coppola's immense talent and referred to him as a legend in the industry. Fogelson emphasized that working with Coppola on "Megalopolis" was a privilege, considering his immeasurable contributions to cinema.
In response, Coppola expressed his confidence in Lionsgate, citing their expertise and successful handling of his film "Apocalypse Now," which continues to generate revenue and appreciation even after 45 years since its release.
"Megalopolis" also features a stellar cast including Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, Grace VanderWaal, Chloe Fineman, James Remar, D.B. Sweeney, and Dustin Hoffman.
As the release date draws nearer, audiences and fans of Coppola's work eagerly await the cinematic spectacle that "Megalopolis" promises to deliver.
